该钱是用北宋太宗淳化年间（990年）铸造流通中的一枚“淳化元宝”铜钱，在钱背雕刻阳文、右坐云之上的两尊佛像（指善财童子和观音菩萨“称童子拜观音”），他们的形态、位置、大小都与沈鸣镝文中金质佛像图录大致一样，这说明古人是以淳化元宝金佛像钱为样，又巧借淳化元宝铜钱钱缘的宽度和钱肉的厚度来刻琢凸起的画面。

The money is a "Chunhua Yuanbao" copper coin cast and circulated during the Chunhua reign of Taizong in the Northern Song Dynasty (1990). Two Buddhist statues (referring to the Golden Wealth Bodhisattva and Guanyin Bodhisattva as "Bodhisattva worship the Golden Buddha") are carved on the back of the money. Their shape, position and size are roughly the same as those in Shen Mingfu's works. This shows that the ancients used Chunhua Yuanbao Golden Buddha as money. In this way, the width of money margin and the thickness of money and meat of Chunhua Yuanbao copper coin are used to carve out the protruding picture.

“淳化元宝”金钱背所铸的两尊佛像，均有莲花宝座和祥云依托。莲花是佛教的象征，说明这种金币与当时的佛事活动有一定的关联，佛教自东汉时期传入我国之后，唐代时发展到了兴盛阶段。但是，由于五代时期地方割据，致使佛教受到了摧残。到了宋代初年，宋政权对佛教进行了适当的保护，停止对寺院的废毁，并派人去印度求法，使佛教得到了恢复。五台山出土的这批佛像金钱，是宋太宗淳化年间巡幸五台山时烧香敬佛铸造的，充分显示出宋政权对佛教的重视。
