紫檀有许多种类，金星紫檀、鸡血紫檀、牛毛紫檀、花梨紫檀、黑檀木、红檀木等等。黑檀木其木质呈黑色，且密度高，含油脂，生长于印度尼西亚苏拉威西赤道两旁，斜坡峻硝石头上。生长速度缓慢，5年才一年轮，要800年以上才能成材，硬度为木材，系称“帝王之木”，非一般木材所能比。据华盛顿公约组织发布消息，黑檀木列入环保之列，禁止采伐，将步入象牙、犀同样的保护行列。黑檀木其材质特殊，具辛辣味，蚊虫不生，疯蚤走避，色泽优美，条理分明，是自然界的宝物，更是人类财富的象征。小叶紫檀有檀香木的香气，尤其是新制做成的衣柜，当打开柜门或拉开抽屉时，都能闻到。其木屑水溶液呈灰绿色，液面似紫药水，一般称为荧光现象。真正的小叶檀的材料目前在市场上很少，如一般有以紫檀做的物件与家具，价格上也是非常昂贵的。
小叶紫檀是宫廷家具名贵用材之一，一直以来素有“紫檀木中，黄花梨木之后”之称。但随着时间推移，在海南黄花梨原料枯竭、一木难求，越南黄花梨无料供应的情况下，海南、越南黄花梨与印度小叶紫檀的市场行情从2006年开始逐步拉开了距离。小叶紫檀与越南、海南黄花梨材料之间的差距拉开了10倍到30倍之多。
